The Things, Part 9

The Thing lay in bed in a tiny studio apartment; a gray skinned specter void of life. An investigator worth his weight in salt would have sworn the man had been dead for weeks. A metal oscillating fan with no safety cover and a broken housing slowly retrained its aim on the bed, the sheets moving in waves as water lapping on a seashore. The little pink and blue ribbons tied to what was left of the safety cage stood proud of the fan, fluttering wildly as the cool breeze molded the sheets to the Thing’s body, sculpting and shaping like an invisible hand on clay. A wedge of sunlight shone through the window, creeping silently, slowly across the pillow. A fly landed on the dead man’s forehead and began an … Read entire article »

How my writing career began.

I remember sitting in the small supposed dining room in my grandmother’s house on Lay Lake in Alabama sometime in high school. It was a two story home shaped like two octagons glued together. From the living room, you walked through the long and narrow kitchen to the dining room. In it was not a dining room table as one might imagine, but a large desk where my grandmother would handle her affairs. She had turned it into a quaint little office. Grandma had a word processor sitting against the wall, the kind that came in a case and you could carry around with you – portable. I remember you slid the thing out of the case like a sleeve and I believe it had a flip up screen. I don’t … Read entire article »

The Things, Part 8

…the Thing had lunged at her; now it laid on the ground at her feet a bloody, unrecognizable mass. Its face stared up at her (what was left of it anyway), its lone eyeball gazing into her own, as if to say “help me”. The side of its head concave, now a spongy red and gray mass, looked surreal to her as the green grass provided a sharp contrast to where the Thing’s skull should have been. She had broken its jaw clean in two, one side of it protruding grotesquely through its chin. She didn’t cry. She didn’t scream. She reacted, her basest animal instinct – kill or be killed – kicked in and directed her body. As she brought the club down atop the Thing’s head, she felt nothing. Emotionless, … Read entire article »

How To Win Friends And Influence People

I finished reading How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie today. Sitting at the lake at Fort Yargo State Park today during my lunch break, I finished up the last six chapters of this book. I spend three days a week at the park during my lunch break to partake in the peace and quiet and solitude as well as a little reading or fishing; angling for the non layperson.Originally published in 1936, my particular paperback copy was published in 1965 and was owned by my grandmother’s second husband. I hear he was a great man and I think this book had a lot to do with it. He unfortunately passed away before I was born, as did my paternal grandfather. I would have loved to have … Read entire article »

Fiction Friday #213

This week’s Fiction Friday prompt: Ted (Theo to his closest friends mind you, although his given name was Theodore) sat in the folding canvas chair under the dimming sky, watching the little pinpoints of light from distant bodies appear as he pondered the log pyramid he had built that day. The warmth of the fire on his feet felt wonderfully refreshing after his quick wade in the meandering brook only feet away from where he camped. A flutter from his teepee’s open door caught his attention He broke his gaze and reached for the Igloo sitting on the ground next to him. Reaching in, eyes fixated on the pyramid beyond the fire, he fumbled blindly for an apple. Again and again his numbing fingers found bottles and cans and plastic bags bobbing … Read entire article »

One, An Excerpt

This is Part One of a new story I’m writing, the result of about a whole ten minutes of typing. I’ce decided to try my hand at writing again and finally put all of my stories into a single compilation. After I’m done editing, it’ll probably grow to several pages. They always do. When I stepped out the door to face the world today, I did not expect to face a world different from the one I’ve always known. Things seemed different the minute I shut the door behind me and slid the key into the deadbolt. Walking to my car seemed to take an eternity. Something was in the air and although I couldn’t place my finger immediately upon it, I could feel it was there. I clicked the unlock … Read entire article »
