Got a lot of writing in, and I feel accomplished.

It’s been a very busy weekend. Friday morning, while I intended to skip out this week due to my CYOA obligation, I wrote my Fiction Friday story. I wasn’t feeling the prompt at all, but because of New2WritingGirl’s threat of certain death I decided it was in my best interest to give in and write something. What the hell, I needed the practice. Saturday I wrote my first ending, the ending to my own story, for the CYOA project and yesterday I wrote the other two. My second ending is my favorite. And of course, you’ll have to wait till it’s released to read it. I’m not giving anything away here. I fear retaliation from the Grand Poobah of the CYOA. I can’t see them, but I know they’re there: the snipers … Read entire article »

Fiction Friday #174

This week’s Fiction Friday prompt: Use this lyric from Shore Leave to flavour your story: “Hong Kong drizzle on Cuban heels” Note: Shore Leave is a song by Tom Waits. Look him up. If you like the blues, you’ll appreciate his music. I wasn’t really feeling this prompt, and I have three endings to write for my part of the CYOA book I’m collaborating on that are due tomorrow, but I decided I’d go ahead and go for it anyway. Oh, and New2WritingGirl, this one is for you. Tom Waits’s growling voice flowed from the juke box through the bar, “Hong Kong drizzle on Cuban heels” sticking in his mind like one of those songs you wish to forget but can’t; the song that incessantly plays in your head that drives you all … Read entire article »

I’m glad I never became a mechanic.

Sometimes I think I should have become a mechanic. Then again, no. No only no, but hell no. My main reason (and well justified, if I do say so): whatever happens to the car after you’ve worked on it, no matter that it had nothing to do with anything you did, it’s your fault. Ad to that the fact I view working on cars as a necessity (when things break on my daily drivers) and a little bit of a hobby (on my Trans Am), I absolutely hate working on other peoples’ cars. And you know what? Sometimes I don’t have the knowledge or tools necessary to get the job done. I have a big beef with mechanics. Long gone are the days of real, actual mechanics. Nowadays we have “technicians”. Don’t … Read entire article »

A little update on what’s been happening in my world lately.

How about some news? I know I said I was going to get back into blogging, and I fully intend to. I’ve just been really busy around here lately, what with getting ready to go back to school and all. Want the low-down skinny on what’s been going on the past month? Well, here you go (hope you brought something to play with because this is going to get a little boring). Four weeks ago I was laid off from my job of two and a half years. Yeah, the one I went to after being laid off from a seven year job. In short, the economy sucks and the product we specialized in was nothing more than eye candy for buildings and as a result is usually one of the first … Read entire article »

Why I Hate Fireworks Shows

Last night I went to see my first fireworks show in I don’t know how many years. I’ve never gotten any enjoyment out of them. When I was little I was always forced to go and when I did go, I saw the same thing. People would go to these shows, play their patriotic songs, wear their American flags, and “Ooh!” and “Aah!” at the fireworks. To me it was all just a guise, a way for people to show off and say “Hey, look at me! I’m patriotic!” Where are these people during the rest of the year?Such was my feeling with church, and precisely the reason I don’t go nowadays. That’s another subject for another post though. My wife asked me if I wanted to go last night and … Read entire article »

Fiction Friday #173

This week’s Fiction Friday prompt: Why did the Tooth Fairy fail to deliver coins one evening? Flipping the switch on the siren, I tapped the brakes, rolled cautiously through the intersection of Twelfth and Oakwood, slammed the accelerator and watched through my periphery as the speedometer in my cruiser climbed steadily upward. My reds and blues flashed back at me tauntingly from the storefront windows that lined the street, as if to say “hey wait! The emergency’s right here. Where are you going?” I received the call as I was sitting in the drive-thru ordering my dinner – a young woman’s body had been found in the park over on Eighth Street – and I found myself, of course, angered at yet another break ruined by the scum of society I … Read entire article »

Fiction friday #172

This week’s Fiction Friday prompt: Use one or more of these words in your story (but resist the temptation to look them up first!) * Periapt * Vilipend * Embrangle This week’s prompt struck me as rather interesting and fun. Anyone that knows me on a personal basis knows of my propensity to substitute words at sometimes inopportune times (the result of my speech impediment). I used my own personal experience in conversation and used a bar that I frequent for the setting. Let me know what you think. Oh, and the definitions are at the end of the story. I didn’t want to put them at the beginning because it would ruin the telling. “… and you’re so periapt it’s not even funny.” Lewis thumbed the bill of his faded … Read entire article »

Fiction Friday #171

This week’s Fiction Friday prompt: “Albert is Dead” Along with romantic scenes, many writers find writing a scene which involves killing a character a challenge. Here is your chance to write a scene where a truly objectionable character dies. Step 1. Go and read “Doggone” – a Friday Fiction first draft piece from a week ago. Step 2. Decide who, what and how Albert dies. It may be accidental, a blundered break in, monster attack – or by one of the many characters within the short story who may or may not have a motive. Step 3. Now write… You can choose to be as graphic or lyrical as you like, choose to show but not tell – or just tell it all. The only rule is – Albert must be dead by the end … Read entire article »
