Man, oh man. I’ve spent every afternoon, and a little bit of every morning, since last Monday or so learning how to use WordPress. As is the case with just about everything I do, I jumped in with both feet before seeing how deep the pool was. Being that this kind of thing appeals greatly to me, I didn’t have all that much trouble with it; mostly just trial and error fixes on my part.
I just got tired of Blogger. Period. End of story. While it’s a great platform for the beginning blogger, those of us that don’t want to pay for hosting our own blogs, and the not so tech savvy among us. I feel into the first of the three, just toying around with blogging as something to fill an afternoon. To be honest, I didn’t see the appeal in blogging at all in the beginning. And well, we see where I am now.
I decided I wanted more out of my blog. I was using the free hosting site Mister.net to host my web site (an amateurish attempt compared to this one) and linking from it to my two Blogger blogs. I was never happy with my site and the fact that I couldn’t get my blogs to look the same. I wanted continuity. I tried the whole linking blogger to my domain name using sub-domains, but the fact of the matter was I was still stuck with something unprofessional.
So that’s where I am now – and what you see here. I imported the two blogs I previously mentioned, as well as two other ones I had that were just sitting there. The two dead blogs were the result of my thinking I was a creative genius and split my one main blog into three smaller ones. One became a cooking blog and the other became a computer tech blog. No one ever read them, so I decided to import them into this one as well.
So my very first blog, The Angry Georgian – just a simple blog about nothing in particular was built, broken into three pieces, and eventually glued back together and placed here.
My WordPress experience thus far as been a pleasant one. Sometimes I get a little frustrated with it though. Not because of its user interface or what have you, but my own impatience that makes me want to hurry up and get things done. This almost makes me want to open a business creating and maintaining WordPress-powered web sites. I love creating things like this, but doing things for other people wears me thin.
I used a ready-made template for this site (see the link at the bottom of the page), but I’ve hacked it up and edited it so much it’s not even funny. For instance, there was only one sidebar; I added the second. I took the author’s links out of the footer and simply linked back to his site and included one to WordPress; just showing a little WordPress etiquette. Hey, I’ll file a lawsuit in a heartbeat if I find someone using my writings as their own; the least I can do is give credit where it’s due. I’ve done a lot to this site. And trust me, I’ve got it automatically backing up every day.
Check back often, as I am still working on it and making updates. I keep noticing little things here and there I want to tweak and edit.
