Living With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

So what’s it like living with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?
When I leave the house, I have a ritual I have to perform. I go over a list in my head while performing it. I actually say out loud “phone”, and feel for my phone in my left front pocket; then “knife”, and feel for my knife clipped to my right pocket; then “wallet”, and make sure my wallet is in my right rear pocket; “keys”, and grip the keys tightly in my left hand to make sure they’re there; “thumb drive”, and feel for the thumb drive in my right pocket; “iPod”, and make sure my iPod is in my left pocket with my phone; then “paper”, and press my left rear pocket to make sure I hear the slight crumbling sound of the paper booklet I make every week that I write stuff down in that I have to remember. Then and only then can I leave the house.
This is just one small part of what I live with every day. There are many, many other aspects, none of which I care to get into in a public forum such as this due to their very nature. Here’s a pretty comprehensive list of symptoms, a great deal of which I suffer from.

Does this mean I’m a WordPress master now?

Man, oh man. I’ve spent every afternoon, and a little bit of every morning, since last Monday or so learning how to use WordPress. As is the case with just about everything I do, I jumped in with both feet before seeing how deep the pool was. Being that this kind of thing appeals greatly to me, I didn’t have all that much trouble with it; mostly just trial and error fixes on my part.
I just got tired of Blogger. Period. End of story. While it’s a great platform for the beginning blogger, those of us that don’t want to pay for hosting our own blogs, and the not so tech savvy among us. I feel into the first of the three, just toying around with blogging as something to fill an afternoon. To be honest, I didn’t see the appeal in blogging at all in the beginning. And well, we see where I am now.
I decided I wanted more out of my blog. I was using the free hosting site Mister.net to host my web site (an amateurish attempt compared to this one) and linking from it to my two Blogger blogs. I was never happy with my site and the fact that I couldn’t get my blogs to look the same. I wanted continuity. I tried the whole linking blogger to my domain name using sub-domains, but the fact of the matter was I was still stuck with something unprofessional.
So that’s where I am now – and what you see here. I imported the two blogs I previously mentioned, as well as two other ones I had that were just sitting there. The two dead blogs were the result of my thinking I was a creative genius and split my one main blog into three smaller ones. One became a cooking blog and the other became a computer tech blog. No one ever read them, so I decided to import them into this one as well.
So my very first blog, The Angry Georgian – just a simple blog about nothing in particular was built, broken into three pieces, and eventually glued back together and placed here.
My WordPress experience thus far as been a pleasant one. Sometimes I get a little frustrated with it though. Not because of its user interface or what have you, but my own impatience that makes me want to hurry up and get things done. This almost makes me want to open a business creating and maintaining WordPress-powered web sites. I love creating things like this, but doing things for other people wears me thin.
I used a ready-made template for this site (see the link at the bottom of the page), but I’ve hacked it up and edited it so much it’s not even funny. For instance, there was only one sidebar; I added the second. I took the author’s links out of the footer and simply linked back to his site and included one to WordPress; just showing a little WordPress etiquette. Hey, I’ll file a lawsuit in a heartbeat if I find someone using my writings as their own; the least I can do is give credit where it’s due. I’ve done a lot to this site. And trust me, I’ve got it automatically backing up every day.
Check back often, as I am still working on it and making updates. I keep noticing little things here and there I want to tweak and edit. And speaking of updates, I have to get to work on October’s short! Click on the Shorts! tab above to read the August and September installments. Be sure to check back on October 1st!
And by the way, I am in no way, shape, or form a WordPress pro. When I learn how to code a whole site from scratch, then we’ll talk.

It’s okay! Just let it burn!

… for those things that absolutely, positively, have to be incinerated.

My neighbor brought this home for me earlier this year. I was tired of the unsightly piles of charred wood scattered throughout my back yard and decided it was time to beautify it and go old school in the burning shit department.
I drilled 1/2″ diameter holes all around with a step bit in my DeWalt corded drill. There’s one in the bottom for drainage and three placed vertically at every quarter point around the perimeter to allow for air flow. The result is what you see here. I only started using it yesterday and I must say, it works pretty darned good.
As you can see in the background, I have quite a collection of yard debris to torch. What you see on the right hand side is the pile of saplings I cut down to make room for my shed (I recessed it in a pocket at the edge of the woods). On the left side is the stuff from the front yard I threw over the fence to add to the party. I’ve got a ways to go. We burned yesterday and today and have barely made a dent.
I’m on the lookout for a cheap metal garbage can with a lid so I can store the ashes. When the soil gets too acidic I will use it to even out the PH. It also works great for tomatoes – just drop about a quarter cup full in the bottom of the hole before you plant. And I can use it to make soap – which I will be trying … at some point. Oh yeah, and I’ll be sprinkling it around the perimeters of my planter boxes to keep the slugs and snails out.
I want to go get some cinder blocks and build a level base for it. The barrel will actually sit on some fire bricks though, so it’s suspended above the cinder blocks to keep the heat from cracking them. That will probably get done after the planter boxes get finished.
And speaking of planter boxes, one of the businesses in the building I work in threw out a bunch of tubs that looked like they were made of fiberglass or some kind of thick plastic. I’m going to go check them out tomorrow. If they’ll work for me, all I’ll have to do is sink them into the ground and fill them with soil.
We shall see!

Wanna see some girl’s junk?

Did I have you going? Yes? No? Maybe a little? Were you thinking I was referring to some girl’s crotchetal zone? My spousal unit would not be too happy with that. What kind of pervert are you anyway?

One of my blogosphere friends Erin did something pretty neat a while back, back in my Angry Georgian days; she posted I’ll Send You Junk, You Post About It! Fun!
Okay, when I say a while back I mean June. I’m a bad, bad blogofriend. I set things aside sometimes and let them slip my mind. This morning I was scrounging through the myriad nick-knacks of my own junk on my desktop, culling things to throw in the garbage can (yet again), when I came across this little piece of junk – Erin’s junk.

Healthier drinking with our new stainless steel water bottles.

My wife and I drink a lot of water. A lot. I’m not sure of the exact amount she consumes on a daily basis, but in my case, being that I drink damn near nothing but water, I come in somewhere between one-half to three-quarters of a gallon every day; even more on days I go to the gym.
In trying to be environmentally responsible, I finally bought a SubZero stainless steel water bottle last week at Belk. I’ve been reading about the quote-unquote dangers of using and reusing plastic water bottles for a long time, namely plastic leeching BPA (Bisphenol A) into the water. I use an empty water bottle when I go to the gym and just refill it at the water fountain. The whole BPA issue got me thinking a long time ago but I was, quite honestly, too cheap to shell out the money for a stainless steel water bottle. We went to Belk last week for a sale they were having, mainly to get a new belt since my loss of weight has necessitated smaller ones, and spotted said SubZero bottles on the checkout counter. They were on sale for only $6.99 so I figured what the hell – go for it, and got a black one.
At home I washed it out – and by washing I mean filling it half-way with water and adding a few drops of soap and shaking it violently with the lid on – and set it aside to dry. The next morning I threw the lid on with the intent of using it at work for the day instead of the usual plastic cup I have sitting at my desk. So I screwed the lid on and went on my merry way. When I got to work I opened it up and I have no idea why, but something drove me to take a peek inside; and when I did, what did I find but two faint rust spots down in the bottom.
I then went online on my phone and quickly discovered that these bottles are notorious for rusting inside. If you Google something like “SubZero stainless water bottle reviews” you’ll see what I’m talking about. Needless to say, I didn’t use it that day and when I got home I got online again and researched the best brands to buy.
Friday night, in honor of the Labor Day weekend and the accompanying sales taking place, I went to the Champ’s Sports site because we have a 20% off coupon, but nothing came up when I searched “water bottle”. I then went to Dick’s Sporting Goods and only found plastic bottles, which of course I didn’t want. My searching eventually took me to good old REI over at the Mall of Georgia. They, as always, had exactly what I was looking for.
Yesterday morning we made our way over there expecting a big Labor Day weekend sale crowd and were pleasantly surprised to find just the opposite. Long story short, my wife and I walked out of there with two Klean Kanteen Classic 27oz stainless steel water bottles (orange for her and brushed stainless finish on mine) and a pair of sports lids (the squirt bottle style) for only $3.95 a piece. Normally at the $20 mark, these bottles were on sale for only $13.99 (good until Monday, by the way). Last night I washed them out with the plastic bristled bottle brush and guess what – this morning, not a rust spot to be found!
What I like about the Klean Kanteen is the fact that the bottom inside portion is rounded, whereas the SubZero and many others I looked at actually came down to a ninety-degree corner. I don’t like the corner at all because it is damn near impossible to clean and many times, mildew grows there and you can never get rid of it. With the rounded bottom, my bottle brush can scrub every square inch of the inside of the Klean Kanteen.
Now you can find me in the gym sans re-used plastic water bottle, sporting my new brushed stainless steel Klean Kanteen.
One wonderful side-effect of the water bottle is that we can just fill them up using the Brita filter at home in the mornings and refill them at work. My wife’s office has an actual water filtration system that feeds their water cooler from the hard lines and my office uses a water cooler with the bottle on top. Here at home I’m planning on installing one of those under-sink water filters so we can have filtered water fresh out of the tap without having to spend money on Brita filters anymore. I really want to install a whole house filter too. I’ll have to get my neighbor the plumber to help me with that one.
Here’s to healthier drinking water, money saved on Brita filters and the annoying task of constantly refilling the pitcher, and money saved on buying cases of bottled water!

An update on my compost tumbler.

I put another load into my homemade compost tumbler today, which has quickly become a weekly occurrence. And I wonder who’s sneaking into my back yard and stealing it.
I fill it to the brim every week with the usual compostables (Firefox says compostables isn’t a word, but it is in my world so I’m using it anyway): kitchen scraps that I keep in a gallon size Ziploc bag and a good load of shredded paper. I fill it to the brim, but when I go to fill it again, everything has broken down to the point where the barrel is only about a quarter full.
Apparently it’s working.
And it’s working good. Somehow or another I’ve managed to mix in the right amount of “green” matter with “brown” matter so that I have yet to even add water to the mix. Yep, you read that right. I actually put so much green matter in there – remember green matter naturally has a lot of water in it, like vegetables, fruit peels, etc. – that I have to balance it out with tons of shredded paper to soak up all the water that is released when it breaks down. Luckily my primary source of income is drafting, so I have a nearly limitless supply of paper to shred.
It doesn’t stink either; it’s got that nice earthy smell to it. When it does start to smell a little, all I have to do is add more paper and tumble it a few times. And the insects love it. I’ve found spiders in it, all kinds of flies, gnats, creepy-crawlies, etc.. Surprisingly, they stay inside the barrel and you don’t even know they’re in there until you take the lid off. They are welcome guests though; they actually aid in the breakdown of the stuff in there.
I’ve also added more things to it. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve started putting things in like pocket lint, dryer lint, nail clippings, hair, shavings from the chunk of basswood I’m attempting to whittle into a canoe …
I flip the barrel over several times after I fill it to get everything mixed up good. Other than that, I will flip it once or twice a week when I find myself taking out the garbage, under orders from the Queen, under duress of course.
It’s somewhere between a quarter and half full right now. I think that when it reaches the pipe in the middle, I’ll empty it out into some buckets and start anew. Which reminds me – I need to go Google and see if there are any special tips on storing compost. One thing’s for sure – I’m going to have some healthy plants next Spring.
