Murder At Mellow Mushroom

Last night my wife and I decided to visit Mellow Mushroom again. We haven’t been in weeks and had a craving for their Gourmet White pizza.
It’s the same every time. We always order the Gourmet White minus the tomatoes and with the onions only on my half. Every once in a blue moon though, I’ll order a small Mighty Meaty and she’ll get plain old cheese. We always get their cheese bread sticks. Last night they were different. They’re usually a big sub roll all sliced up with the cheese and stuff on top. Last night it came out as french bread slices. Way less bread than they normally serve, but delicious anyway. They also offer a ten percent discount if you have an annual state park pass. Ten percent seems small, but it shaves over two dollars off our bill every time we eat there.
On to the point…
On the way up the stairs into the building, I noticed a big mass out of the corner of my eye. To ensure myself it wasn’t another hallucination brought on by my caffeine withdrawal, I turned my head to see a big flock of pigeons rounding the corner of the building. As soon as my brain registered the fact that they were pigeons, there was a sudden explosion of feathers. So many in fact that it nearly clouded out the whole flock.
The flock kept flying and as the feathers cleared, there sat a hawk on the small grassy knoll, proudly grasping his prey. He stood tall and proud, as if to say “Look what I did!” while turning his head left and right. It was almost like he was looking around to make sure everyone witnessed his prowess as a hunter. A mere second later, he spread his wings and flew away with pigeon in hand…er…talon.

I wrote this one yesterday. This is the first thing I have written in over ten years.
I was working in the yard a few weeks ago clearing a spot for our new shed, miserable from the heat, when the wind started to blow. I decided to apply a technique I saw in Jet Li’s Fearless wherein everybody in this remote village would stand up when the wind would blow, as if to absorb its energy, and then continue working with a seemingly renewed spirit. Much to my surprise, it actually worked.

i know a man
he came from japan
he wears a black hat
with a sword on his back
he knows karate
he loves to party
as strong as a bear
he has long black hair
he wears wooden shoes
and listens to the blues
he likes to throw knives
has had twenty wives
he lives in a box
has ridden an ox
he lives down the road
has one extra toe
enough of the man
who came from japan

hello my name is onion
and i like to make you cry
because the oils in my skin
irritate your eyes

we could amount to something
we really want to try
but you throw is in the pan
and listen to us fry

my cousin was an artist
my brother liked to sing
but all you did was chop them up
to make onion rings

you humans are so ruthless
we wish you all would die
but we cannot do anything
but sit and fantasize

This one was almost published in my high school newspaper after my English teacher went nuts about it. She read it and immediately posted it to the wall with several other “outstanding” works. I never thought it was all that good.

like the candle in your window
you were so far away
it was almost too late
and i should have said it sooner
i stayed hidden in myself
showing love for no one
not even myself
memories of my past
locked away forever
making me think
making me realize
i love you

i am digging my way
through this earth
little by little i whittle

i have been digging away
ever since birth
ever since i was little

i dig every day
for what it is worth
and i am growing brittle

i am wasting away
my health is failing
and i am only in the middle
